The Nicotine Patch is a form of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help you quit smoking.  By delivering a constant, measured amount of nicotine through the skin, the nicotine patch can reduce the discomfort and cravings that often accompany a quit-smoking program.

The nicotine patch works by replacing the nicotine that you would normally receive in cigarettes with nicotine delivered transdermally by a patch which is applied directly to the skin. The patch is worn day and night and slowly releases nicotine to the wearer.  Patches are then replaced every 24 hours.  As part of a complete quit-smoking program, nicotine patches can help relieve the symptoms of tobacco withdrawal.

Generally, the way that nicotine patches work is that users stop smoking and start wearing a nicotine patch, usually for 16 to 24- hours per day.  Patches are replaced every day, and over time, users step down the amount of nicotine in the patches, thereby gradually decreasing their dependence on nicotine, until eventually they stop needing to wear a patch altogether.

NicoDerm CQ is the most popular brand of nicotine patch and is produced by GlaxoSmithKline, a leading and trusted pharmaceutical company. NicorDerm CQ is available in three strengths:

  • Step 1: 21 mg
  • Step 2: 14 mg
  • Step 3: 7 mg

The NicoDerm CG therapy program has two lengths, depending on how many cigarettes a day you currently smoke:

More than 10 cigarettes a day = 10 week therapy, starting with the 21 mg strength:

  • Step 1: 21 mg for 6 weeks
  • Step 2: 14 mg for 2 weeks
  • Step 3: 7 mg for 2weeks

10 cigarettes a day or less = 8 week therapy, starting with the 14 mg strength:

  • Step1: begin with the middle strength (14 mg), Step 2
  • Step 2: 14 mg for 6 weeks
  • Step 3: 7 mg for 2 weeks

This should give you an estimate of the total number of patches you would need to purchase to complete the full program. However, please read all of the safety information, directions and program description and follow all directions that are included with the patches – this is not a complete description of the program.

As with any nicotine replacement therapy, nicotine patches contain nicotine, an addictive drug, and you should follow all precautions and health warnings. Please consult your physician before beginning this or any form of nicotine replacement therapy.
